Become a Chief

Marching Chiefs is an ensemble available to any interested student enrolled at Florida State University. Students are not required to be a music major – actually, about 70% of the Marching Chiefs are non-music majors. Participation is determined by audition and director approval, and approved students must enroll in the assigned Fall class through the College of Music to gain credit for their time as a Chief.

Marching Chiefs is open to students meeting the following criteria:

  1. Official enrollment at Florida State University;*
  2. Successful completion of the audition procedure;
  3. Permission from the Director to enroll in the ensemble-class

*Please note: Special students, non-degree seeking students, and dual-enrolled students are not eligible to enroll in Marching Chiefs.

Steps to Audition

Brass, woodwind, and percussion auditions are held in August prior to the upcoming football season. Flag and majorette auditions are held in April prior to the upcoming football season.

Step 1
Request Information

To prepare for auditions, please share your contact information with us. There is no obligation to audition by sending us your contact information. Contact information can be shared in one of two ways:

  1. Request online using the digital request form.
  2. Call the FSU Band Office at (850) 644-3507.

Once we receive your request, you will be entered into our database of interested students. Prior to your audition, you will receive detailed information about the audition process and how to prepare by email.

Step 2
Prepare for Auditions

Once you're on the contact list, you’ll receive detailed instructions specific to your section—Visual Teams, Brass/Woodwinds, or Percussion—by a set deadline. Each section has its own audition format and timeline, including early video submissions for percussion and in-person auditions for others.

Step 3
Register for Auditions

After deciding to audition, you must officially register. Separate forms are used depending on your section (Visual Teams, Brass/Woodwinds, or Percussion Prescreening), and links are provided to complete your registration online.

Step 4
Attend Preseason Training

Preseason Training, which includes music auditions and marching evaluations, takes place ten days before the fall semester begins. It is mandatory for all potential members and serves as the final audition phase for most sections (while Visual Teams complete auditions earlier, their attendance is still required at Preseason Training).

Step 5
Finalize Your Participation

If you’re selected for the official Block List, you must receive director approval, register for the Marching Chiefs class, and complete a medical exam. These steps finalize your membership and prepare you for the upcoming season.

Do I perform well enough to make Marching Chiefs?

We make every effort to accept as many students as possible into the Marching Chiefs. While many music majors enjoy participating in the Marching Chiefs, around 70% of our band members are non-music majors, and these students are a very important part of our program.

Will Marching Chiefs interfere with my schoolwork?

Rehearsals are scheduled at a time of day when few other classes meet, and little class time is lost due to travel. With careful planning, you should have time to participate in the Marching Chiefs. You will be responsible for keeping track of your time and keeping up with all of your academic work. Plan ahead – you can do it!

FSU's Great Give is finally here! You can make an impact by supporting both the Marching Chiefs (Chiefs United) and Summer Music Camps (Music to Weather the Storm)!
