Step 2: Prepare for Auditions

Audition procedures vary by section, so be sure to review the process that applies to you.

Students who have shared contact information (Step 1) will receive complete details by email prior to the auditions. This information is delivered on or before March 15 for Visual Teams, on or before May 15 for Percussion, or on or before July 15 for Brass and Woodwinds in the year before your first semester of potential participation. If you do not receive this information by the dates noted above, call the band office immediately at (850) 644-3507.

Visual Teams

Visual Teams (Color Guard and Majorettes) auditions are held in late April prior to your first semester of participation. Please note, we only accept auditions for flag (color guard) and baton (majorettes).

The audition will consist of a prepared routine to music of your choice. After the prepared audition, you will be taught a routine to perform for our adjudicators. If you pass the audition, you will be invited to join the Marching Chiefs. You must then report to Preseason Training in August.

Auditions for visual teams are currently closed for the 2025 season.

Brass and Woodwinds

Brass and Woodwind auditions are held in August during Preseason Training, approximately ten days before the first day of fall semester classes. Please note that we only march the following instruments: flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, mellophone, trombone, euphonium (baritone), and tuba.

There are three important components to the brass/woodwind audition process:

  1. playing audition is held at the very beginning of the Preseason Training week. You will be asked to play music provided to you in advance. This music will be available on or before July 1. You will also be asked to sightread and play some scales. The scales will be detailed in the audition information.
  2. Your marching will be evaluated over the entire Preseason Training period on an ongoing basis. Our staff will teach you our marching fundamentals, and you will be evaluated on what you have learned.
  3. At the end of the training week, all students are given a final evaluation, and from those evaluations, the Marching Chiefs Block List is selected (subject to approval by the FSU band directors). The Block List is posted on this website on the Thursday before classes begin (typically).

Percussion

Percussion students must submit a ‘prescreening’ video by July 1. Only students who have successfully completed this prescreening process will be invited to Preseason Training. Please note: we only march battery percussion instruments (snare, tenors, basses, and cymbals). We do not have a front ensemble.

Percussion auditions happen in two steps: (1) a prescreening, and (2) a report to Preseason Training. The prescreening is completed by downloading the audition packet and submitting an audition video per the instructions in the packet. If you pass the prescreening, you will be invited to Preseason Training, where you will complete the audition process. Do not report to auditions in August unless you have successfully completed this process.

If you are seeing this for the first time after July 1, please call the band office immediately at (850) 644-3507.

FSU's Great Give is finally here! You can make an impact by supporting both the Marching Chiefs (Chiefs United) and Summer Music Camps (Music to Weather the Storm)!
